FAQ: Registration & Application Process

• How do I find out about upcoming trainings?

  Upcoming trainings are posted on the website Training Calendar. Click here or on the ‘Training Calendar’ tab to access the calendar. Trainings are posted as soon as the locations and dates are confirmed.

  You can also click here or the ‘Apply for Training’ tab at the top of the page and click again on the intervention training schedule that interests you.

  (If you do not see an upcoming training or if the location/date does not work for you, the intervention Training Schedule page invites you to add your contact information to receive email alerts about other course dates and locations for the intervention.)

• How can I get into a DEBI training?

  1. Click here or the “Apply for Training” tab and then select the intervention you are interested in applying for.
  2. Select “Click to Apply” for the date/location you are interested in. If you do not see a training that works for you, please follow the instructions to receive alerts with new training dates for specific interventions.
  3. Follow the instructions for sign-in and complete the application form.
  4. You will receive an automated response verifying your application was received.
     *Note: Application does not guarantee acceptance.
  5. Confirm your acceptance. Danya will confirm your acceptance and send you information on training logistics.
     *Please do not make travel arrangements until you have received an email acceptance from Danya staff.

• If the training that I am interested in applying for is closed, is there a wait list that I can be placed on?

  We do not maintain wait lists, but when you are at the intervention Training Schedule page, you can click as indicated to be alerted of other course dates and locations for that intervention.

• Who should participate in the training?

  Specific information about the appropriate participants for the training is included on many of the intervention home pages. Generally, DEBI trainings are designed for agency staff who directly implement or facilitate the intervention with clients. In some cases, the program manager who oversees the intervention is encouraged to attend.

FAQ: Training Cancellation Policy

• What is the DEBI Project's Training Cancellation Policy?

  When Danya lets you know that you are accepted into a training, we have every expectation that the training will occur as scheduled. However, on rare occasions, CDC and Danya have to cancel a training due to low participant numbers, trainer illness, or inclement weather, which is most often a concern during the winter months. While this is an infrequent occurrence, it is strongly recommended that you buy refundable airfare and hotel accommodations. The training coordinator from Danya will contact you via email no later than 15-20 days prior to the start of the training if it is going to be cancelled due to low participant numbers, or as soon as this decision is reached. In the case of inclement weather or trainer illness, you may not receive notification of the training cancellation until a day or two prior to the training. We requested your cell number on the application form so we can reach you during non-business hours, if necessary. If you have any reservations about whether a training may or may not happen, please contact the Danya training manager who sent you the training acceptance email. Please note: CDC and Danya are not responsible for any lost funds due to a training cancellation.

• How does my agency request assistance via the CBA Request Information System (CRIS)?

• How can my agency request assistance in implementing and/or adapting a DEBI intervention?

• What if I have other questions that are not answered here?

FAQ: Training Logistics and Content

• What is a TOF?

  “TOF” is an abbreviation for “Training of Facilitators” and is a training provided to agency staff that plan to implement an intervention for their community.

• What is a TOT?

  “TOT” is an abbreviation for “Training of Trainers” courses, which target experienced trainers who represent (a) a CDC-funded Capacity Building Assistance (CBA) provider or other CDC-funded training partner, and/or (b) Health Departments so they can learn how to deliver the TOF training curriculum. Participants who successfully complete a TOT will be able to conduct TOFs to prevention providers who will implement the intervention.

• How much does a training cost?

  The trainings are provided to you at no cost. Depending on where you live, you may have to pay for travel to the training and overnight accommodations.

• Are food and drink provided at trainings?

  Unfortunately, food and beverages are not provided at the trainings. Participants will need to bring or purchase lunch, snacks, and beverages.

• How long are the trainings?

  Each training varies in length. For example, VOICES/VOCES trainings are two full days and RAPP trainings are five days. You must participate in the entire training to receive a certificate of completion. Please view the Training Specifications document located on each intervention homepage, listed in the left-hand column, for more information.

• What happens at a training?

  The trainers use a CDC-approved curriculum that has been tested with and developed specifically for program agency staff implementing the intervention. The content of the trainings varies and involves a mix of activities designed according to adult learning principles. For example, a DEBI training may include all of the following: lectures/didactic presentations, short videos, small group work, role plays, and other opportunities for hands-on skills building and practice.

• I was accepted into a training but now I have a scheduling conflict and cannot make it. What should I do?

  If you are no longer planning on attending the training for which you were accepted, please contact the AED training coordinator immediately to let them know. You may also work with your supervisor to have another staff person take your place. Please notify AED as soon as possible about any changes in attendance. If you are a “no-show” – meaning that you do not attend after you confirmed that you would and you do not inform AED prior to the training – you may lose your priority status to attend future DEBI trainings.

• Where do I get materials to implement the intervention?

  At the training, you will receive everything you need to begin implementing the intervention. If you need replacement materials after the training, please contact us at interventions@aed.org or (800) 462-9521. There may be a charge for lost items.

FAQ: Training Requests

• What if I work for a CBO and want to request a training in my city?

  CDC works with AED and the trainers to schedule trainings according to demand. CDC approves all DEBI trainings before they are added to the training calendar. If you feel there is enough demand in your area to support a training, please contact your Health Department or CDC Project Officer, or contact AED at interventions@aed.org or (800) 462-9521 to further discuss your request.

• What if I represent a Health Department that wants to schedule one or more trainings in our state/city to support our grantees?

  CDC asks that you participate in the Health Department DEBI training assessment process, conducted with AED and the STD/HIV Prevention Training Centers (PTCs). A survey instrument is sent to Health Departments. After Health Department staff complete the instrument, they participate in a conference call with AED and their PTC. The outcome is a training plan for the state. Please contact your PTC or AED (at interventions@aed.org or (800) 462-9521) to schedule an assessment for your state or jurisdiction.
